I have been sharing about the California Surf Museum for years now, but our family actually just visited this fun Oceanside museum for the first time this past month! We stopped in while visiting the Sunset Market and I am not quite sure what took us so long!  It is a small museum, but well worth the visit for any surf or ocean enthusiast.

My husband surfs (when he has a free morning, which isn’t nearly as often as he would like) and the kids are obsessed with the idea of surfing because Daddy surfs.  We loved looking at boards, magazines, bathing suits, videos and other pieces of surfing history.  With two school aged kiddies and one just starting preschool we love museums!  I would not say that the California Surf Museum is not kid friendly, but it is one where kids do need to keep their hands to themselves.  As stated before, it is a small museum so we were in and out in about 30 – 45 minutes which was just about as long as our kids can stand in a ‘keep your hands to yourself’ kind of place.  It was actually perfect, in a very short time they learned quite a bit about the history of surfing, how boards are made, and so on.  I love when our staycations turn into a learning experience too!

The big kids are kind of obsessed with Bethany Hamilton and they were thrilled to find a whole exhibit dedicated to their favorite surfer.  Among other things you can see the actual surf board she was riding the day of the shark attack, her bathing suit, newspaper articles, and more!

If you are a North County Resident or visiting – make sure to stop in! The California Surf Museum is located at 312 Pier View Way, Oceanside, CA 92054. They are open daily from 10am to 4pm.  On Thursdays they extend hours until 8pm because of the Sunset Market.  Prices range from $3 – $5 for admission and admission is FREE on the first Tuesday of the month.

While admission is free on the first Tuesday, I HIGHLY suggest visiting on Thursday because you can enjoy the Sunset Market – enjoy vendors, live music, and some of the tastiest tacos you will ever taste!
