Halloween Candy Buy Back Programs

by Kate  on: October 19th, 2012

When Halloween is over our tradition is to bring about 80% of it to the dentist.  We aren’t a completely ‘no candy’ family – but we don’t eat much of it.

Halloween Candy Buy Back is a VERY cool idea!  Area dentists will have a special day where you can come in with a bag of candy.  They will buy it for $1 a pound and the candy is sent to the troops serving overseas.

Our kids usually leave with $3 or $4 (that is A LOT of sugar!).  I take them straight to the 99 cents store – or the Target dollar bin and let them go pick out whatever silly toy or craft they want.  I am happy we have less candy in the house, they are happy because they still have a little candy and also a bright and shiny new toy, and the troops are happy!  Everyone wins!

You can check out their site and enter in your zip code to find the participating dentist nearest you.  If the site is not yet updated with day and time the contact information is right there to get the exact when and where.

Other things we have been known to do with Halloween Candy…………

- Smuggle it away and use in stockings at Christmas – I’m fairly confident there are items in our candy bowl that have been recycled in and out for a couple years. (I’m not sure I am proud of that – but for reals – do Smarties EVER go bad?)

- Hard candies make great filler in Operation Christmas Child Boxes (or other donation boxes for the holidays).

We take a majority to the dentist – but they do still get to enjoy some of it.  Just a fun idea if you were looking to get some out of the house without just tossing it!

Enjoy ~ Kate

Great idea! I also save it for making gingerbread houses at Christmas.
